Followed Home From Work

Author: JK

I work at a drugstore so it is open 24 hours. After my shift I decide to walk home because I live four blocks away. Yes, it’s three in the morning, but I have my house key in my hand on all of my walks in case someone tries something. It sounds crazy & paranoid. I’d rather be safe than sorry though. I’m slowly walking home because I’m so damn tired that I’m hardly awake. About a block away from work I hear someone cough and I’m not too suprised. It’s late, but there’s always some people out. So I just continue walking and then I notice the cough is on purpose. It’s kind of weird that someone would fake cough at 3 a.m. or anytime really. So as I’m walking I assume the person is behind me a distance and then I feel warm breath on the back of my neck. It’s the third cough and somehow someone managed to stay so quite that I didn’t hear anyone he walking at all. When I hear the cough form right behind me I jump a little. I’m thinking it’s gonna be something worse than it is. Stupid me, it’s just another co worker that thought they would try and scare me in the dumbest way. Well, it worked. So as they head in the store for their shift I continue walking home. It took me nearly 10 minutes to get past the first block away from the drugstore because of how slow I was walking and the fact that I had a little conversation with my co worker. Now I’m just kind of amused, but annoyed because I could be at the end of my street if they didn’t wanna freak me out so badly. I’m now about almost half past the second block when I hear a stupid cough again. So I just turn around the ask my friend to just stop and go or they will be late clocking in. When I turn around I see someone and what they look like because the cast of the streetlights. He’s got huge eyes, and he’s actually kind of attractive. He reminds me of Rami Malek from Mr. Robot & Bohemian Rhapsody. I just shout out at him at cough back and continue to walk. He’s a guy not too much older than me and he seems like he just thought it would be funny to annoy me the way my friend just did. Now, I hear his footsteps coming closer. I look back and he’s not as far away, but not too close either. I see him laugh so I nervously laugh back while just trying to get the hell home. I’m now at a normal pace so I’m almost at the edge of the third block & I’m relieved I’ll be asleep soon and this weird night will stop. I take notice in the fact that this guy may not be joking. His face wasn’t showing any signs of him thinking he was funny anymore. Now, he was being very strange. He wasn’t angry or pulling a funny face. He just turned his head to the side a little bit like he was thinking real hard. I’ll never forget his damn face…he has tears running down his face and he had this crazy laughter coming out of his mouth. He went between that and between looking confused and I honestly had no idea what he was contemplating. He then shouted, “ why are you out so late, don’t you know not to interact with strangers.? “ He walked a little faster towards me. I saw him laugh even harder now. I booked it down the rest of the last street. When I was at the end of my street, a car pulled up and a guy that looked identical to this man got out and started coughing. He ran towards me and I had no choice but to use my key to jab him a few times and make sure he was down so I could call the police. The police came and arrested these guys. I later found out that these were two twins that were known for following people, but not actually harming them. The thing that gets me is when I went to make a written statement at the police station I asked to speak to the arresting officer for a minute. He told me when he brought them in the one that was following me said he really had no bad intentions, but the other one sad he was out to do more then his brother or anyone knew about. He gave them a gory description of what he wanted to do to someone and what would have been me. Some days I wish I never asked what was planned in that one guys head.
